Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes

You’ll get a kick out of this holiday stalwart, which still features Santa, wooden soldiers and the leggy, dazzling Rockettes. In current years, new music, more eye-catching costumes and advanced technology have been invented to bring audience members nearer to the performance.

Whatever faults one may find with this impressively lavish annual pageant—it’s essentially a celebration of the virtues of shopping—this show has legs. And what legs! In the signature kick line that finds its way into most of the big dance numbers, the Rockettes’ 36 flawless pairs of gams rise and fall like the batting of an eyelash, their faultless unison a testament to the disciplined human form. This is accuracy dancing on a massive scale—a Busby Berkeley number come to glorious life—and it takes your breath

The Book of Mormon

If theater is your religion and the Broadway musical your group, you’ve been sadly faith-challenged of late. Dare some, boundary-pushing works such as Spring Awakening, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Next to Normal closed too soon. American Idiot was shamefully ignored at the Tonys and will be gone in three weeks.

In the interim, that airborne infection Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark controls headlines and rakes in millions, without even opening. Superstars and corporate products sell poor material, inventions get shown the door, and crap floats to the topmost. It’s enough to turn you heretic, to sing along with The Book of Mormon‘s Ugandan villagers: “Fuck you God in the ass, mouth and cunt-a, fuck you in the eye.”

Such intensely penetrating lyrics provides  a drop of the manifold scato-theological joys to be had at this cruelly hilarious treat crafted by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, of South Park fame, and composer-lyricist Robert Lopez, who co-wrote Avenue Q.

As you laugh your head off at perky Latter-day Saints tap-dancing while ferociously repressing gay tendencies deep in the African bush, you will be taken back ten years, when The Producers and Urinetown revived American musical comedy, instilling time-tested conventions with met theatrical ridicule and a healthy dose of bad-taste humor. Full with cheerful obscenity, sharp satire and catchy tunes, The Book of Mormon is a sick mystic revelation, the most exuberantly entertaining Broadway musical in years.

Dyker Heights Holiday Lights

Dyker Heights residents take the holidays very important : The houses in this nabe are decorated out with thousands of lights, life-size toy soldiers, inflatable Santas and lots  more. Take in all the best displays on this 3.5-hour bus tour.

Sleeping Beauty Dreams

Erstwhile American Ballet Theater leader Diana Vishneva and Marcelo Gomes unite for this new multimedia dance-theater work, which reveals  what dreams May come to Aurora when she has scuffled off this waking coil. The dancers’ movement, choreographed by Edward Clug, is augmented by live digital avatars created by Tobias Gremmler and fuse.

Micro-Nutcracker

If you are growing wary of more-is-more Christmas spectaculars, Cynthia King’s 16-minute edition of The Nutcracker might be what you need. Featuring dancers of all ages and skills—the youngest among them is 3 years old!—the show takes a modern setting at the old holiday story, with an eye toward the dangers of consumerism.

The Day I Should Have: Been Proud

Storytelling star Danny Artese meets an all-star lineup of queer performers to talk about coming out, developing their identities and celebrating Pride (even on its half birthday). He’s combined by Elana Lancaster, David Lawson, Julie Threlkeld, Miko Cho and Rebecca Marquardt.

Brooklyn Queer Comedy Festival

New York’s growing queer comedy scene gets its height at this epic showcase.  Buy a drink at the spectacular queer bar 3 Dollar Bill, all while witnessing some of the city’s finest  drag and comedy performers go at it. The second version boasts initiator Ryan McLendon, along with Samantha Ruddy, Mini Horrorwitz, David Goldberg, Dylan Adler, Jon Wan, Veronica Garza, Elsa Waithe and Chris Murphy.

A Dancer’s Christmas

Composed by longtime Jesuit pastor Robert VerEecke, this liturgical dance piece is targets at those who want a little flavor in their Christmas shows. Steven Cornwall and Maresa D’Amore Morrison play Joseph and Mary, combined by members of the Chevalier Ballet Firm, 10 Hairy Legs and other groups. A Boston holiday tradition for decades, the show is only now making its New York debut

The Bang Group: Nut/Cracked

Choreographer David Parker and his Bang crew repeat their neovaudevillian edition of The Nutcracker, a comedic deconstruction of the holiday piece that mixes tap, ballet, contemporary dance and disco. The cast includes teen dancers from the Dalton School and the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.
