NBA Draft Lottery… The NBA Draft lottery is a yearly event held by the National Basketball Association (NBA), in which the teams who had missed the playoffs of a previous year participate in a lottery process to determine the draft order in the NBA draft, i.e. to draft players who are eligible to join the team.

When is the NBA draft lottery 2020?
The 2020 NBA draft will be held on the 20th of June, 2020. It is set to take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Which teams participate in the draft lottery?
Every year, 14 teams participate in the lottery, as it is only for those who did not qualify for the previous season.
Which team gets the best odds?
The team that finished with the worst win-loss record has the best odds to get the first overall pick in the draft. The percentages decrease from worst record to best record amongst the 14 teams. If two teams finish with the same record, then they split their odds.
How is the lottery determined?
Ping pong balls are numbered 1 through 14. There is a four-number combination randomly selected from the lottery machine. The order that the numbers are drawn, does not matter. Each team participating in the lottery is assigned specific combination outcomes. There are a total of 1,001 combinations (although if 11-12-13-14 is drawn, it is ignored as it is the only combination not assigned to any team). They continue this process to determine the second and third pick as well.
Eligibility for the NBA Draft
The starting point when considering eligibility is that a player must be at least 19 years old during the calendar year of the Draft and, if not deemed an international player, be one year removed from high school.
AUTOMATICALLY ELIGIBLE:
To be automatically eligible, the NBA requires an athlete to meet one of the following criteria:
- They have completed four years of their college eligibility; or
- If they have graduated from high school in the USA but did not enroll to a college, four years have passed since graduation; or
- They have signed a contract with a professional basketball team not in the NBA and have played under the contract.
For an international player to be considered automatically eligible:
- They have to be at least 22 during the calendar year of the draft; or
- They have signed a contract with a professional team outside the NBA but within the USA, and have played under the contract.
EARLY ENTRY PLAYER:
In the USA, it is very common for athletes to play at the college level for one year and then (upon turning 19 and being one year removed from high school) enter the NBA Draft. This is known as the ‘one and done’.
Many prospects choose this route before becoming a professional player in the NBA as they are not automatically eligible. These athletes must declare their eligibility no later than 60 days before the Draft and it must be accepted by the NBA.
INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS:
For a player to fall under this category, they must meet all of the following criteria:
- Permanently reside outside of the USA for at least three years before the draft;
- Have never enrolled in a US college or university; and
- Did not compete in high school in the US.
How to Apply for the NBA Draft Lottery
For those who didn’t attend college:
Step 1 – Review the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the NBA Players Association to see if you are automatically eligible for the draft. Declare yourself as an early entrant if you are not eligible.
Step 2 – Make your request for early entry status in writing to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver at 645 Fifth Ave., New York, NY 10022. Make sure the NBA receives that letter at least 60 days before the June draft.
Step 3 – Fill out and return the draft application you receive from the NBA in response to your declaration letter.
Step 4 – Decide whether you want to withdraw from the draft by the league’s deadline, which is 10 days before the event.
For a college underclassman:
Step 1 – Review the collective bargaining agreement to see if you must declare yourself as an early entry.
Step 2 – Explore your draft potential before surrendering your college eligibility. Request an evaluation from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee in writing two days after the NCAA championship game. Assess the response from the committee, which includes executives from 20 NBA teams. Ask your coach to check with NBA general managers to get additional opinions.
Step 3 – Weigh your decision whether to leave college carefully. Step 4 – Wait until the NBA’s early entry deadline before deciding whether to enter the draft. That deadline is 60 days before the draft. If you declare for the draft right after the season, you will be subject to the NCAA’s “early entry deadline” one day before the start of the spring signing period. That deadline usually comes about two weeks before then the NBA deadline, forcing you to make your decision sooner than necessary.
