Two 3.5-Year D.Phil. Studentships

The Department of Engineering Science at Oxford is offering Two 3.5-year D.Phil. studentships, available from January 2020. The studentship is available to UK or EU nationals only.

This ambitious programme will develop and apply cutting-edge experimental and theoretical techniques to make new breakthroughs in the emerging field of [email protected] technology. The vision is to harness the structural, physical and chemical diversity of MOFs to afford nanoengineering of revolutionary functional devices for detection of mechanical, chemical, thermal, electrical and optical stimuli.

The Department of Engineering Science at Oxford is the only unified department in the UK which offers accredited courses in all the major branches of engineering – our students develop a broad view of the subject much appreciated by employers, but can also choose from a very wide range of specialist options.

Scholarship Description

  • Applications Deadline: November 16, 2020
  • Course Level: Studentships are available to pursue DPhil programme.
  • Study Subject: Studentships are awarded in Nanoengineering of Smart Materials.
  • Scholarship Award: Each studentship covers a stipend (tax-free maintenance grant) of £22,000 p.a. for the first year, and at least this amount for a further 2.5 years. The studentship does not cover the payment of University fees (c £4463 p.a. UK/EU students) or college fees (c £3215 p.a.).
  • Nationality: The studentship is available to UK or EU nationals only.
  • Number of Scholarships: Two studentships are available.
  • Scholarship can be taken in the UK

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Candidate Requirement 

Prospective candidates will be judged according to how well they meet the following criteria:

  • A first class or high upper second class honours degree in Engineering Science, Physics, Nanoscience, Materials or Chemistry;
  • Experience of materials-oriented research demonstrated by a publication in an international conference, journal, or a first-class final year project report;
  • Excellent English written and spoken communication skills;

The following skills are desirable but not essential:

  • Experience of nanomaterials characterisation techniques (for studentship 1);
  • Experience of ab initioquantum mechanical computational techniques (for studentship 2);

English Language Requirements: Applicants must have excellent English written and spoken communication skills.
